Mushroom Village is an immersive environment I built in Unity with 3D models I created with Blender. This world was in collaboration with another student for our Immersive Environments class and I focused on the creative direction, world-building, and designing mechanics while he focused more on implementing the movement and mechanics within the world as well as contributing additional 3-D models.

Initial Steps

To begin, I sketched numerous concept arts of our planned setting as well as the creatures that would inhabit it. We knew from the start we wanted to do a cozy environment. Following that, I created models in Blender as well as image renders of our concept.

Implementation

After this, I started creating our world in Unity. Playing with the lighting, sky, and placement of our models. For our world I drew inspiration from cozy games such as Animal Crossing as well as open world games like Genshin Impact. This led to our desire to have there be a day and night setting in our world, while initially, we wanted to implement a smooth day or night cycle with our experience level, and the time we were given it would not have been feasible. Instead, I worked around this by creating a day version and a night version of the world and designed an idea that there could be a portal that takes players between the two times. My partner worked to implement this mechanic into our unity world. Our builds are available in Itch.io but overall it is a cozy mushroom village the player can traverse and by walking into a glowing cube they can switch between the Daytime and Nighttime.
